North Carolina Wreck Diving
August 8-11, 2024
Join the The Dive Shop On McEver Crew on a trip to North Carolina. We will be diving with Olympus Dive Center out of Morehead City, NC., and plan to dive such wrecks as the German U-boat 352, Schurz a WWI gun boat, Papoose a tanker torpedoed by German U-boat 124 and the Aeolus sunk as part of the artificial reef program. All the dives are 75’ – 110’ deep, so Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Certification are required for this trip.
Wreck Diving in the Graveyard of the Atlantic
Bathed by the clear, warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the coast of North Carolina offers some of the best scuba and wreck diving in the United States. Whether interested in sight-seeing, underwater photography, maritime or military history, a technical diver or just beginning, North Carolina offers something for scuba divers of all interests and skill levels.
Nitrox: If not yet certified this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of nitrox. Learn how nitrox can increase your no decompression bottom times, especially on repetitive dives. In this course you will learn how to manage oxygen exposure, analyze oxygen content in your scuba tank and how to set your dive computer for diving enriched air nitrox.

Graveyard of the Atlantic
Morehead City, NC
Right on our front door step, just miles off the East Coast, as WW II raged in Europe, the general public wondered why the eastern sky was lit with fire and the beaches covered with oil. Our parents and grandparents used to talk about never seeing anything in the papers about these weird fires on the water at night on the East Coast. We now know what really happened….
We will be diving the North Atlantic in an area called The Graveyard of the Atlantic. The wrecks are all in 60-130′ of water with a few of them being a little deeper to the sand. Visibility runs from 20-30′ around west of Cape Lookout to over 100′ on the far offshore wrecks. Water temperature is in the upper 70’s with an occasional dip into the lower 70’s west of Cape Lookout. The area is washed with the gulf stream which keeps the water relatively warm and clear. Most divers are quite comfortable in a 5mm with a few sporty souls jumping in with shorties (not recommended).
As far as diving goes, we will be diving Nitrox 30% and strongly recommend that whichever gas you breathe, you MUST use a dive computer.
Atlantic Wreck Diving can be challenging as it is and it’s no place to dive without proper planning and gas management. Computers should be an integral part of you dive kit when venturing off shore as we will be.
There is no rental gear on board so make sure you arrive at the boat with everything you need including tanks, weights and all personal dive gear.
Current water temperature is 79°F on the surface and probably be the same top to bottom. We usually wear a 5mil or 7mil wetsuit with a hood and I also recommend you wear gloves of some sort since we will be on steel shipwrecks.
